Synopsis
Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner is a landmark comedy-drama that centers on Joanna Drayton, a young woman who returns home to introduce her parents to the man she intends to marry. Their surprise quickly turns into a profound challenge when they learn that her fiancé, Dr. John Prentice, is a highly accomplished Black physician, raising questions about race, prejudice, and social expectations in 1960s America.
As family members and close friends gather for dinner, differing opinions emerge about the couple’s future. Joanna’s parents, who consider themselves progressive and open-minded, must confront their own beliefs when faced with a deeply personal situation. The discussions that follow reveal generational tensions and the complexities of love, family, and acceptance.
Balancing humor with thoughtful social commentary, the film examines interracial marriage at a time when the subject was highly controversial in the United States. Its powerful performances and timely message helped make it one of the most influential films of its era.
